Asymmetric Contact Loss Dynamics during Plating and Stripping in Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) hold the potential to improve energy density and offer enhanced safety when compared lithium‐ion batteries. However, development of practical SSBs faces major challenges, such as filament growth void formation, which necessitate a comprehensive understanding intrinsic solid–solid interfaces limiting mechanisms. In this work, underpinning asymmetry in mechanistic interplay resulting interface dynamics during Li plating stripping is demonstrated, illustrating critical effect reaction heterogeneity on contact loss behavior. With increasing rates, manifestation point contacts identified key descriptor that signifies transition electrochemical response from regime continuous decay current constriction. It revealed can also occur at Li/Li 6 PS 5 Cl interface; severity scales with an important challenge toward achieving faster charging rates SSBs. The distinct nature competing electrochemical–mechanical interactions govern formation plating/stripping are delineated work. Coupled these mechanisms, non‐uniformities external pressure temperature fields drastically alter dynamics, disparate localization patterns.
